How can you feel better about gift-giving during the busiest shopping season of the year? I’m personally a fan of making gifts, but when I do buy, I like to support companies that are doing good, companies like B Corporations. Not only will you be able to give a cool gift, but also a story of positive impact that will make your friends and family feel great.

B Corp is a certification given to businesses that meet a set of rigorous standards for accountability, transparency and social and environmental performance. In their own words: B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk.

As a proud B Corp ourselves, we like to give some love to our fellow B Corps, especially during the season of giving. Here are a few B Corp holiday gift ideas that we think are really special:

GROSCHE

This Ontario-based B Corp makes sleek and modern coffee and tea accessories that make fantastic gifts and beautiful additions to any kitchen. Everything from coffee grinders and french presses to tea infusers and premium glassware can be found on the their website.

What is even better is the way that they give back; with the GROSCHE Safe Water Project, proceeds from each sale go to helping water-insecure communities around the world rise out of poverty by working with them to create sustainable systems for obtaining clean drinking water.

 Lucky Iron Fish

Here’s a neat idea: If you have trouble getting enough iron, but the cost of supplements gets you down, Lucky Iron Fish has developed a product - it is literally an iron fish - that you can boil in liquid or broth-based meals, to release a bioavailable form of iron into your food. You can get 90% of your daily iron, in a way that is inexpensive, cute and can be used for up to 5 years!

Through their Buy 1-Give-1 program your purchase helps distribute Lucky Iron Fish for free to communities in need.

Klean Kanteen

Klean Kanteen offers some great ways to reduce waste and “give gifts that last.” Their durable insulated bottles are perfect for keeping all those delicious wintery drinks hot and helping you stay cozy during the next polar vortex.

Saul Good Gift Co. Saul Good.jpg

Don’t have the time to put together the perfect gift yourself? Saul Good (Get it? Saul Good? Very punny.) handpicks locally-made items from around BC to create fun gift baskets of every kind. Their themes range from chocolate and gourmet food to spa, baby and new home, and they ship across Canada! What’s more is they work to promote social enterprise and build community by sourcing handmade goods from local artisans and working with companies that employ workers from underemployed populations. I’d say that’s win-win.

Prana prana.jpg

I don’t know about you, but my favourite gifts are often edible. Prana Organic sells an eclectic selection of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and mixes of all of them. We usually have a bag of the Kilimanjaro Deluxe Chocolate mix going in our Montreal office and it is addictive! You can buy online or in various stores across Canada. Happy munching!

Grey Rock Clothing Co. GreyRock.jpg

Guelph, Ontario-based Grey Rock Clothing Co. aims to make high-quality, ethical, sweatshop-free clothing and jewellery, and they do it while looking good. Take a peek through their lookbook, you’ll see that their clothing is laid-back and stylish, and isn’t that the look that everyone is going for? Not only are they a B Corp, but many of their suppliers are B Corps too, so you can feel extra good about your purchase.

When all else fails, the gift of beer almost never goes unappreciated. Our friends at Beau’s have a delicious selection of brews (Try the Lug Tread or the Tom Green Milk Stout, you won’t be disappointed!), and it is available at liquor stores across Canada (and if you live in Ottawa, they even do home delivery)! In keeping with their desire to do ethical, sustainable business, Beau’s uses clean fuel in their production and shipping processes, sources their ingredients locally whenever possible and is employee-owned through an Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP). So what are you waiting for? This holiday, drink for a purpose!

From everyone here at CoPower, we wish you a happy, safe and sustainable holiday!
